Google is stopping Gears in FireFox 4, IE9 and Chrome 12

Google team announced in their Google Gears blog that they will stop the Gear services for new browsers like newer browsers such as Firefox 4, Internet Explorer 9 and Google Chrome 12.

The code itself will of course remain open source, and anyone is free to use it.Google-Gears

Currently Google is focusing on HTML5 and now improving the HTML5 capabilities in Google Chrome. In their blog post, Google said that they are implementing HTML5 File API, which is very similar to the Gears Blob functionality.
